The Independence Day of Indonesia

If you’ve visited Indonesia in August, you’ve surely noticed the ubiquitous flags and decorations. There’s a reason for that. This week, August 17, 2024, Indonesia will celebrate 79 years since the declaration of independence.

The people of Indonesia are very proud of their independence, which is why you can see decorated streets and houses with flags throughout whole August. Ceremonies and festivities are held across the country, including a national flag hoisting. The President gives a speech to the people at the People’s Consultative Assembly, various competitions and celebrations are held, shopping malls offer special discounts, etc. Flag decoration is also enshrined in the Constitution, every citizen of Indonesia is obliged to hang a flag in front of their house.

The main ceremony is flag hoisting ceremony held ar Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, with the President of Indonesia attendance, accompanied by the Vice Presidente, to reenact the declaration of independence roclaimed by President Sukarno in 1945.

If you are in Indonesia on Independence Day, be sure not to miss the local celebrations. Parades, games and competitions are held all over the country, such as Krupuk eating contests, where contestants must eat typical Indonesian crackers with their hands behind their back.

Many hotel resorts, restaurants and beach clubs offer activities and program during the week of Independence day. Do not hesitate to find out where are the nearest events in your area. You will have fun.
